When it comes to our health it can be very easy for us to forget the basics which will contribute towards a healthier, and ultimately happier life. Back in 2014 I moved down here to Austin, Texas and I was very happy to find out that I had the wonderful Dr. Roger Olade as my neighbor, a man who specializes in internal medicine and works tirelessly with people in curing disorders and those with disease. Dr. Olade and I have enjoyed many chats about medicine, internal and otherwise, and he has always been a great help when it comes to matters of health. Recently we spoke about the basics and how not enough people take action whilst they can, and if you think you may fall into that category here are the simple steps which you should be taking.
Drinking water is something which is very simple to do yet not enough of us are consuming the right amount each day. As a rule of thumb men should be drinking between 3-4 liters of water daily and women should consume between 2-3 liters of water per day. Our bodies need water to survive and when there isn’t enough of it in the body it will look at other places to draw water from such as skin, bones and organs. The result of dehydration is a lack of energy and focus, poor skin and hair condition, lethargy and even some chronic disorders which can be caused over the long term.
Looking after yourself isn’t always difficult and the perfect example of that would be sleep and getting enough of it. A lack of sleep over long periods of time has been closely linked with heart disease, dementia and other brain issues which slow us down as we age. We should be getting between 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night and the word ‘quality’ is very important here. Your sleep should be uninterrupted so getting a nightly routine worked out is a good idea. Sleep gives our body and mind the chance to rest and process, a vitally important function.
Fruit and Veg
Fruits and vegetables are packed with nutrients and vitamins that are essential to our body’s growth, ability to fight disease, and ability to repair. There is a notion that you should be eating 5 fruit or veg per day but even upping the amount which you currently eat will greatly help. Don’t underestimate the power of natural produce and if there is something which you don’t enjoy eating, look for more exciting or interesting varieties to try, there is enough for all tastes.
The final cornerstone of your health basics is exercise, not necessarily hammering the gym every morning, but at least 30 minutes of exercise per day will help your body to become far more healthy. This light exercise regime will help you to feel better and more energetic, as well as helping to pump blood around the body and improve your overall health.
There is no secret science to being healthy, just follow the basics.
