For years now, we’ve been hearing about foods that are good for heart health. Doctors even keep charts in their offices with specific foods to keep in mind and which ones to avoid to maintain healthy organs.

Today there is growing evidence that certain foods are good for our brains, too. A study out of Rush University Medical Centre in Chicago states that if you change your diet to incorporate a unique selection of nutritious foods, the chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease are reduced by as much as 53 percent.

Eating well is an important part of Dementia care services and maintaining good brain health.

Of course, there are many factors that contribute to an individual developing Alzheimer’s disease, and they are certainly not all related to the types of food we digest. 

However, it never hurts to digest healthy, nutritious foods that can actively support brain health.

Oily Fish

Oily fish is an excellent source of Omega-3 fatty acids that help build membranes around cells in the body, including brain cells. It improves the structure of brain cells. There have been several studies that prove that people with higher Omega-3 levels demonstrate better cognitive and thinking abilities.

Look for fish such as:

  • Salmon
  • Tuna
  • Mackerel
  • Sardines
  • And more

Nuts and Seeds

A 2014 study concluded that higher overall nut intake was linked to better brain function in old age. Much like oily fish, nuts and seeds contain Omega-3 acids as well as antioxidants. 

They are also rich in vitamin E, which protects cells from oxidative stress caused by free radicals.

Sunflower seeds, almonds, and hazelnuts are examples of this nutritious snack. 

And if the idea of munching on some hard almonds makes you wince a little bit — look for almond, sunflower, or hazelnut butter — a softer option to put on your toast in the morning!

Dark Chocolate

The rumors are correct: dark chocolate is good for you! Dark chocolate contains cacao, which is full of antioxidants called flavonoids. 

These antioxidants are incredibly important for brain health because the brain is highly susceptible to oxidative stress, which contributes to age-related cognitive decline and brain diseases.

In a study conducted in 2018 researchers discovered that eating dark chocolate can increase the plasticity in the brain, and this is crucial for learning and can provide other brain-related benefits.

Don’t skip on dessert! But be sure to find dark chocolate that is at least 70 percent cacao so you can benefit from those healthy flavonoids.
