This is the very reason why you need a home renovation checklist. If you’re going to renovate the right way, you’ll leave no stone unturned and know exactly what you’re doing before, during, and after the renovations are complete.
Your Home Renovation Checklist
You can’t just grab a hammer and start taking walls down, you’ve got to have a plan going into the renovation so that you know what’s going on. Proper planning will give you a jumping-off point, but you can always make adjustments on the fly.
The first thing you should do is write down everything that you want to remodel. It’ll be kind of like a wish list because you probably won’t be able to tackle every little problem that you’ve got with your house. As you’re coming up with this wish list, prioritize items so you know what you want to be done now and what can wait.
You’ll also need to come up with a realistic budget to stick to. When you start talking to contractors, this will help them give you an idea of what they can and can’t get done from your list. They’ll understand things like electricity rates and how much drywall costs better than you will, so take their word for it.
Lastly, you’ll need to figure out when you’re going to break ground on construction. Choose a time frame that works for you and anyone in the house.
For example, if you’ve got kids, scheduling the renovations during the summer will ruin their summer break. Whether or not you care about that is completely up to you, but it’s something to think about.
Now you can start your search for the right contractor. The best thing to do is to ask friends or family members that have recently done some remodeling for recommendations. Failing that, you can go online and scout out prospective remodelers.
Find one that suits your tastes by perusing their portfolio, then talk to them about what you need them to do versus their rates. You want to get the best price possible, but you also want the job done to your satisfaction. It’s not the end of the world if you have to tackle different projects in different sessions.
Get a tentative schedule from the contractor so you know what they’ll be doing and when. You’ll need to make hotel arrangements or stay with someone else on days when the water will be shut off, etc.
It’s important to keep in constant contact with the people doing the renovations. If you’re kept in the loop, then you can keep them in the loop about little adjustments you might want to make along the way. Nothing has to be set in stone until it’s actually finished.
That being said, you shouldn’t throw too big of a wrench in your contractor’s plans. A lot of planning and coordination goes into home renovations, so making too large an adjustment could end up costing you a lot of money.
Fortunately, you’ve planned well, so all you really have to do is sit back and wait for your new-look house to arrive.
