While durable, roofs are far from invincible. As time passes, they will take on deterioration. In many cases, this deterioration will necessitate repair

Looking for some signs that your roof is in need of repair? Then you’re reading the right article. Without further ado, here are 7 signs you have a damaged roof that needs repairing ASAP.

Your Shingles are Curled

When manufactured, shingles are designed to lay flush against the surface of a roof. Unfortunately, over time, shingles become weather-worn. Not only do rain and snow cause shingles to deteriorate, but sunlight as well.

This deterioration presents itself in a few different forms, but one of the most obvious is in the way of curling. The more weather damage a shingle is exposed to, the more it will curl over time.

If you notice your shingles curling up at their edges, you need to think about making a change. Not only are curled shingles deteriorated to a severe level, but they’re providing less-than-adequate protection as well.

Don’t allow your home to go inadequately protected. Bring in a roofing contractor as soon as possible.

Your Shingles are Missing

Shingles serve two purposes. One of their purposes is to improve the aesthetic of the home upon which they’re installed. Their other purpose is to provide that home’s roofing structure with protection from moisture.

This is why, if your home is missing shingles, you need to have them replaced as soon as possible. The longer you allow portions of your roof to go uncovered, the more damage they will incur.

If you’re only missing a few shingles, you can have them spot replaced. However, if you’re missing a number of shingles in a number of different areas, you might want to consider a full replacement.

There are Granules in Your Gutters

To reduce UV ray absorption and to improve fire resistance capabilities, asphalt shingles are equipped with rough surface entities known as granules. While these granules are built to withstand wear and tear, over the years, they can deteriorate.

Should the granules on your asphalt shingles deteriorate, you’ll want to replace your shingles sooner rather than later. The question is: how can you tell when the granules on your shingles have deteriorated? The key is to look in your gutters.

When granules deteriorate, they disconnect from their corresponding shingles and slide down into the gutters below. Therefore, if there are granules in your gutters, your shingles have passed their prime, and are in need of a replacement.

There are Water Stains on Your Ceilings

Another sign that your roof might be in need of a replacement is that there are water stains on your ceiling. Water stains on your ceiling could be indicative of gaps in your shingles. Rain and melted snow could be dripping through these cracks, falling onto your ceiling and causing it to become discolored over time.

If you notice this problem, you need to take it seriously. The longer you allow water to drip onto your ceiling, the greater risk there is of your ceiling caving through. Fixing the gaps in your shingles will ensure that your roof is watertight, thus ensuring that no water is able to slip through.

There’s Light Shining into Your Attic

You don’t have to wait for your ceiling to develop stains in order to determine whether or not your roof is leaking. There’s a simpler and more proactive method: look for signs of light at the top of your attic.

If there’s light poking through your attic during the day, there are gaps in your shingles. And if light can make its way through these gaps, so too can water.

While this might seem like a minor problem right now, it could turn into a major problem down the line. That’s why you’re advised to fix it now rather than later.

Your Roof Is Sagging

A sign that your roof requires immediate attention is that it’s sagging. A sagging roof is indicative of severe damage and is generally created by an excess of weight on top of it. Note, however, that severe water damage could cause a roof to sag as well.

This is not a problem that you want to play around with. A sagging roof can turn into a caved-in roof before you know it, at which point, the safety of the people in your home could be threatened.

Generally speaking, this problem requires much more than a simple shingle replacement. In fact, in some cases, it will require the entire rebuilding of the roofing structure. In any case, you should bring in a roofing contractor to assess the problem as soon as possible.

Your Energy Bills are Increasing

Cold and heat make their way into homes through a variety of avenues. Any existing gap is vulnerable, and roof gaps are certainly no exception. Therefore, if you notice your energy bills getting costlier than they once were, your roof could be to blame.

Note, however, that siding gaps, old insulation, an antiquated electrical system, or a worn-down HVAC system could cause this problem as well. As such, if it presents itself, you should look for other signs of roof damage before bringing in a roofing contractor. If you do determine your roof to be the culprit, a roofing contractor will be able to help you.
