Ummm so WTF?!? Loestrin 24 fe, the best birth control pill ever, is now DISCONTINUED!!!! I've been on this pill for close to 6 years now and it was perfect for me and now I need to switch. I NEED HELP BETCHES... what other brands are good? I liked this one because it only had 4 placebo days and I barely got my period ever. I also had no weight gain (lost weight if anything) and it didn't make me crazy... anyone have a similar experience with another brand?

And yea... for all the bitches who are gonna say "why don't you just call your doctor", fucking duh. I want to hear from other girls with real life experience also.

I used to be on Loestrin 24 fe also, I switched about a year ago to Gildess. It’s a generic of Loestrin, so same active ingredients. I really like it. It has the normal 7 placebo days, but you can just get an extra pack and take three extra pills at the end of the month

I was switched to Gildess and I’ve gained weight.  I’m normally normal weight and maintain my weight for years at a time, I don’t go up and down in weight easily so I’m blaming the BCP.  Anyone else gain weight with Gildess?

I gained weight with Gildess and i also had headaches everytime i started a new pack. My periods were all over the place and always came a week early or week late than the placebo pills. My gyno just switched me to Minastrin and my only complaint is that my acne has gotten a bit worse but she told me thats expected due to the increase in hormones and will go away soon.

Alesse caused a lot of spotting and break through bleeding for me and at one point I didnt get my period for almost 3 months. I was on it for over a year and just switched to Gildess which I am starting this month.  Not sure if its any better but it is a higher dose birth control which I didnt want but might help stop the frequent break through bleeding.

i had to switch to gildess from loestrin because my college’s health center stopped getting loestrin for whatever reason. at first i was freaking out becuase i loved loestrin.. no side effects whatosever etc. but gildess is the generic version, which doesnt actually mean anything, as it has the exact same ingredients im pretty sure (double check with your doctor obviously but thats what i was told). ive been on it for a few months now and to me its the exact same as loestrin with the no side effects.

the only annoying part is there are 3 extra placebo pills, but i usually only take the first four the same way i did with loestrin, and start my next pack early so i still have really short periods

First of all girlfriend, calm down. It’s being repalced with Minastrin 24fe which the same thing except you can also chew it. So if insurance or however you obtain the pill is not an issue for you price-wise to get the new brand name, then just get the Minastrin 24 fe.

I feel your pain though, because even though it wasn’t discontinued until now, the price was becoming inhibitive for me a few months ago.

    Here’s the solution….
I switched to the generic for Loestrin 21 which is Junel (yes there are others, but this worked for me with no side effects so I’m recommending it)—Loestrin 21 and 24 are chemically identical, just the quantity of active pills is different. I get 21 day packs of Junel, specifically the ones that have no placebos (you’re supposed to just take nothing for 7 days). But because there are no placebos, my insurance let’s me refill them more often, so I take nothing for 4 days and then start up again.

Keep in mind that if you switch to a generic that has 28 days of pills (includes placebos), you may end up fucking yourself over by taking extras because insurance only covers so many packs over a certain duration of time. That being said, if insurance is not a problem or you don’t mind paying the out of pocket for a couple months, forge ahead.

Only active ingredients are chemically identical.  That is why some generics don’t work for some of us betches.  THANKS for explaining to all about how 21 day packs vs 28 packs are helpful with insurance!  The more we all know, the better.  If all of you betches don’t already know this too, you usually can fill any Rx a few days or more before next month’s Rx date to build a little padding.  Pun intended.

I work for a PBM and normally insurance real picky on how many packs you get because your employer picks up the remaining bill, but here is the secret your dr has to write the script you are taking it (exactly) and I would recommend DAW. I’ve seen it switched to a different that is same, which yes they can do because some pills have multiple generics.

My doctor switched me to Minastrin after they discontinued Loestrin. Worst. Pill. Ever. I’ve been 109 Ibs for the past four years (this is also how long I’ve been on Loestrin 24 fe) and because of Minastrin, I now weigh 121 Ibs and climbing. It ruined my metabolism, I now suffer from extreme mood swings, high blood pressure, severe migranes, swelling in my joints, my appetite is ruined, and I sleep too much, no matter how strict I keep my schedule. I need to go to my doctor because they’re worried about blood clots.

Oh my god this sounds like my life. I’ve gained 18 lbs in the 5 months since I was forcibly switched to minastrin. I did not gain a single pound for the 5 years I was on loestrin. I’ve been severely depressed and sleep too much as well. I did not connect the last set of symptoms. Thanks. I am not taking this devil pill any more. Paraguard is my next option.

Alison - How has Lomedia Fe 24 been going? I have been on the hunt for a birth control as good as loestrin was since it got discontinued. I first switched to Junel but the 7 days of sugar pills made my period go from nothing (on loestrin) to 9 days of hell so after 3 months of that i switched to a super expensive brand called Generess Fe - its a chewable pill with only 4 days of sugar pills again. But it’s $45 a pack and I have experienced some of the negative side effects that other girls report from Minastrin. My hormones are probably all out of whack. But Lomedia seems like it’s more along the lines of what Loestrin 24 Fe used to be… Any feedback so far?

Oh my gosh DO NOT do Paraguard! I just had mine taken out literally an hour ago and just picked up Minastrin 24 Fe. I had Paraguard for 4 months and it was AWFUL! I was having black discharge (with the worst fishy-metallic smell you’ve ever smelt) a week before and a week after my period. Saw 3 different dr.‘s about it thinking it was BV. If you google Paraguard discharge you’ll find TONS of complaints. I wish someone would’ve told me before. Turns out my Paraguard became oxidized, like an old penny. So gross. I haven’t let my husband go anywhere near me down there because it smelled so bad. Also, you bleed like you can’t believe. I went through super tampons in 2 1/2 hours during my period. And I’d never used a super tampon before this in my entire life. And I’m not going to even start about having the IUD inserted. I’ll just leave it at that.

    • Minastrin is not generic says:

Minastrin 24 is the brand name replacement for Loestrin 24 made by the same company, Warner Chilcott. It’s also brand new chemically (since it’s chewable) so there won’t be a generic available for Minastrin at least for years. That’s why it’s 60 bucks, my friend! But generics of Loestrin 21 should give a similar result—Junel, Alesse, etc.

You can get a patient savings card and it will only cost you $24.  Good luck.  My insurance is not recognizing Minestrin as a generic for whatever reason, which stinks because I have been waiting for the generic for years so I could pay less.  Oh well.  And, what is up with the chewable.  Weird.

Omg I was so upset when i found out Loestrin 24 was discontinued and still am, my doctor put me on Junel Fe instead and I don’t think i like it. I had really nice clear clear skin on Loestrin and would rarely get one zit right before my period. On Junel I have noticed a difference with my skin and got a zit halfway through the packet and now right before I end it, not cool. Also there are 7 placebos unlike 4 with my loestrin, I would just skip the placebos and go straight back on the pill but I’ve been screwed by insurance on this before. Overall pretty pissed my birth control was taken away, not sure why the best birth control ever would be discontinued but I feel like Obamacare has something to do with it. Whatever happened to keeping my insurance and my pills?? My co-pay covered Loestrin and does as well for Junel which is good, but I’d rather have my loestrin back!

    Posted on Reply
    • Here's the work around says:

The way out of getting screwed by insurance is a little magic called the 21 day pack. Tell your doctor you want the one without the iron (placebo) pills. It’s just called Junel versus the iron pill placebo pack which is called Junel Fe.

It should look something like this with just 3 weeks of active pills: https://d4fuqqd5l3dbz.cloudfront.net/products/tms/Package_17874.JPG

You can refill these more often since it’s the 21 day supply and then you just take nothing for 4 days in between. I use a marker to draw start/finish lines since the packs start to get a little uneven after you delve 3 pills into the second pack smile

Just to let you know why Warner Chilcott made the switch (Not Obamacare, no matter what you might want to believe)—they were facing huge patent issues with Loestrin 24 and people trying to create a generic, so rather than deal with the patent issue and continue providing Loestrin, they changed the pill ever so slightly so that it’s now chewable Minastrin 24 so they can maintain a patent for the formula.

I just chewed my first one. It’s gross. I’ll be finding a new pill as soon as I can get in to see a doctor.

      • notrollhere says:

Just to be clear- a patent expiring and generics being made is not a “huge patent issue.” I hope everyone here realizes that this new Minastrin 24 was just a way that they could tweak the formula a bit, get a new patent, and then charge out the ass for the new pill. No wonder Loestrin was getting so expensive, they needed to milk it for every dollar they could before they got rid of it. Is it really any wonder why health care is so expensive in this country??

I was put on Loestrin because of heavy bleeding not for birth control. I hadn’t been on a birth control pill in over 10 years because of the nausea and vomiting that they caused even in low dose forms so I was extremely weary. (Even the ring made me vomit)...I usually paid between 85-100 per month for it without prescription coverage and 40.00 with it. This month I was replaced with Minastrin and after refilling it once without my insurance covering it 68.00, my insurance has since approved it and it wil be whatever the copay is. I had very mild nauseau the first week that has since subsided (in week two) and I have chewed it but heard you don’t have to. I hope this helps an gives some peace of mind smile

And it doesn’t seem any different at all. I noticed no changes in regards to symptoms, but I’ve been wondering how necessary it is to chew it.. Like I’m wondering if they need the salivary enzymes in your mouth to release a crucial piece of the hormone. If not then I’m definitely not chewing it cause it is kinda gross. I had to take two yesterday b/c I was one day behind (it was a 3 day fiasco working with my insurance, CVS, and my doctor to FINALLY get this drug that NO ONE seemed to know ANYTHING about it). They told me “it’s exactly the same, I think” When I asked the pharmacist about chewing v. swallowing, he just opened up my pack and looked at the little sheet that comes with the pills. Really? I could have done that and now I have no faith if even the pharmacists are clueless. This morning I’m nauseous and have a headache. I’m getting married this month so reading about the additional symptoms of weight gain, acne, and being an emotional wreck (like i’m not already) sounds like maybe my fiancee is just going to have to wait until we get married to get some. Why can’t the pharmacy companies remember human aspect of when they do shit like this? All they can think of is how to make money once the patent’s gone…betches.

No, boob explosion, but I’m having some spotting issues! It’s making me feel like this pill isn’t as effective as Loestrin fe was.I’m on my second month of Minastrin and I had to double up once becuase I missed 1. 2 days later I’m spotting, and then a full period…again! It’s been 10 days and I’ve religiously been taking my pill but I’m still spotting. Has anyone had this type of breakthrough bleeding?

Yes! I’ve had breakthrough bleeding days 8-13 so far. And, of course, this brings on other issues. Mild cramping, no sex, slightly sore boobs, etc. I have a 3 month supply thanks to mail ordering this stuff. Now, I’ve got to finish them. Hoping they improve or else I’ll switch.

I’ve been on Loestrin about 7 years and about a month or two in I stopped having a period completely. I’ve been off the pill a few times within those years, and my period comes back but then stops again once I get back on it. Right now, I haven’t had a period in years. It’s glorious.

Yeah this is the biggest inconvenience of my life. My pharm has a very convenient automated refill for scrips. So I usually call it in the day before and pick it up the day I am to start taking active pills again. Get there and “oh…they don’t make that any more.” Couldn’t have called me when you attempted to fill it?!!! And the docs office has been even less helpful. Very busy office serving 3 counties so they have horrible hours and don’t seem to care about my problems since it doesn’t involve a baby coming out of me. Called them Thursday and Friday and obviously didn’t hear back over the weekend. Been on this for almost three years and love it. No side effects and only about a day and a half period. Well worth the $40 a month. Glad to hear there is a replacement however I doubt it will be available in my area. This ordeal has caused me great stress and panic. Wouldn’t one think the doc and pharmacy has a duty to notify their patients about something this important?? If this happened with a blood pressure med I’m sure they would. But for responsible young women who want focus on careers/education and enjoy their relationships rather than be a welfare statistic nope…....
That might have been a little harsh but seriously! This is a big deal to me.

My weight is extremely stable, over the past 6 years (all while on loestrin) I’ve stayed consistently in a 5lbs range from 118- 123, averaging 120 most days. I was on Loestrin for 7 years and never had a problem. I would almost always just skip the placebo pills and go directly to a new pack meaning I would rarely have a period unless I decided to take the placebos just to make sure I wasn’t pregnant.
I’ve been on Minastrin for two weeks now and I’ve been cramping/spotting the entire time.  I called my doctor and she said that it’s normal when starting a new pill? Even though they are ALMOST the same there is a little difference which can account for the spotting?
My boobs are hurting too (fingers crossed that they’re growing) but I’m too afraid to step on a scale.
I know some say that you can just swallow it but then I wonder why it is chewable in the first place. Thoughts?!?

So I have been taking Loestrin 24 for 4 years now. It is the first birth control that I took and it worked well.

So about a year ago I switched to “Junel Fe 1 MG- 20MCG tablet because my doctor said it was an equivalent generic and it would be cheaper for my insurance being a generic. I experienced horrible side effects such as severe mood swings and bloating. The worst symptom that I experience was “left arm pain” which says it can lead to stroke, heart attack etc…. So of course I stopped this pill and went back to Loestrin 24.

My pharmacy called to tell me that the manufacturing of Loestrin 24 is being discontinued instead of getting refills. I am really nervous about what pill I should use now? Even though they say Minastin 24 is an equivalent I do not think this is the case. Each manufactured brand formulates things differently as I saw with the generic for Loestrin 24.

So annoyed and frustrated with this drug company!!! :( They took no consideration for the users of their medication.

A few people have already asked this but haven’t seen an answer yet. Do you HAVE to chew Minastrin or can you swallow it whole? I’m freaking out because I’ve been swallowing it for a week because I assumed it didn’t matter (and my doctor didn’t even tell me it was chewable when she gave me a sample) but my pharmacist told me that some effectiveness is lost when you don’t chew it. I’ve seen conflicting things on the internet and just want to know if I need to worry…Regardless, I’m switching off of Minastrin as soon as this pack is up. This whole thing is super shady.

I have an AWESOME doctor!  I see her out of network and pay the difference because I would never risk changing.  Her nurse told me wouldn’t matter if chewed or swallowed.  It makes sense to me—our stomach acid is some pretty strong stuff!  If we betches are really worried I bet we could at least break it in a couple of pieces and swallow it.  I’ve never seen a drug company handle an expiring patent exactly like this before, but it doesn’t seem much more shady than when a patent is about to expire and the company comes out with a new & improved version of a drug that they sell for less $ than the older version.  Look up Provigil and Nuvigil.  My insurance co even made Provigil a non-covered drug when Nuvigil came out, I think simply because of the price.

I guess I am one lucky betch.  My pharmacist AND GYN’s office called to let me know about the change.  Nurse at Dr office is a super NOT betch!  She let me know if I went up to the office they had savings cards so the Minastrin 24 FE will only be max $24/mo co-pay for a year.  I didn’t have a chance to go to her office, but I went online to Loestrin 24 FE site (I didn’t hear the name clearly or write it down when she called).  There is a link to Minastrin 24 FE site and you are able to fill out info & print out your own card & activate it.  You do need to do it before filling first Rx I think.  So many betches have talked about taking generics of what we betches who are taking the real deal Loestrin 24 FE, but there is no true generic.  There are other similar drugs, and there are generics for other Loestrin varieties, but no generic Loestrin 24 FE.  My doc’s nurse said won’t make difference swallowing vs chewing, and I think the pharm did, too, but have read so much since yesterday, I may be getting info about pharm wrong.  At least the same company is so much more likely to have an extremely close match than other companies who claim generics of other Loestrin versions like Loestrin 21, 28, etc. and you read inactive ingredients and see such differences.  Our bodies react differently to many substances.  Not all generics are the same.  Sometimes a generic works similarly, other times not at all, and it is usually something about the inactive ingredients and fillers and how it affects the delivery system to our bodies!  I hope telling you betches about the discount card helps at least!

That doesn’t make sense for the pill to not be effective if you swallow it… It’s still being dissolved by stomach acid just as any other pill would be. Chewing should only speed up the process but not in a way that creates any significant difference in efficiency. This is so confusing and annoying, loved Loestrin24 of course but am noticing after a month of minestrin I’ve been extremely bloated the entire time, I’m already gaining weight, and I have been sore in different spots. Had endometrial hyperplasia (lining WAYYYYY TOO thick with horrible horrible cramps and blood clots the size of my palm.) went on loestrin 24 fe and loved it. Freaked out when I found out it was discontinued when I tried to have my pack refilled the other day. Called dr and they wanted to put me on that ministrin or whatever. I don’t like new drugs, and am afraid of generics. I’ve been on an old loestrin 1.5/30 years ago in my 20’s - 34 now, and I got my dr’s approval to prescribe and for me to take Loestrin 1/20 fe. Took first pill this evening. Nervous and worried. I have anxiety disorders and loestrin 24 fe was godsend. Took it continually back to back bc on the 4 days off my anxiety and panic would rage. Loestrin 1/20 and loestrin 24 fe have the exact same ingredients - believe me I did the research as I’m OCD as hell. But the loestrin 1/20 is yellow, not white. That is throwing my brain off thinking about it. Hopefully everything will be ok. Haven’t had a period since March 2013 since starting loestrin 24 back to back and had no spotting or nausea or any side effects. Hope it’s the same with the loestrin 1/20 I just started taking today. Scared of the ministrin fe…chewable bc is so weird. Just want to stay with my trusty loestrin…

If there is a generic pill, Junel?, why is everyone switching to minestin fe?

  58. Marissa says:

There is no actual ‘Generic’ for Loestrin 24, Junel and all of the others aren’t technically generics because they only have 21 days of active therapy. Loestrin 24 is unique to the world of birth control pills, and that’s why they are losing their patent. Big insurance company law suit. Regardless, the same company that makes Loestrin 24 is now making Minestrin 24 in chewable which are identical. In January of this year, the company will lose it’s patent, meaning that an ACTUAL generic of Loestrin 24 will hit the market. Meaning it will be equivelant to Loestrin 24 in the sense that it only has 4 placebos and 24 days of active therapy. Right now there is no other birth control pill like that with the same dosage. That’s why there’s technically no true generic for Loestrin 24.

  59. Marissa says:

All you have to do is wait until January, then a real generic will be out that will be much less expensive with the same amount of placebos. You shouldn’t be having any problems with this pill, it’s literally the exact same formula. The active ingredients and milligrams are identical as loestrin 24. And you can chew and not swallow if you choose, it gets absorbed the same way.

i haven’t been on this a whole month yet, but i’m on my 3rd week of minastrin 24 fe.. i spotted for a week and a half. maybe a small bit of bloating after downing an 8oz glass of water which i hate doing. doesn’t taste as revolting as i read. it tastes minty to me, now it has no noticeable taste loestrin 24 fe was wonderful, but i was emotional on it as i am on this pill. i don’t care about that. no weight gain… I AM SO GLAD FOR THAT.. i didn’t lose 67 pounds to gain it back.. a usual 2 pounds is all i gain before my period and then it’s gone after that, acne ONLY the week before the brown pills(which is normal for me anyways) no headaches, no really anything.i can’t say i LOVE it because the chewing is stupid, but it’s basically the same for me. i’d just rather have loestrin 24 fe.. i was more confident with taking that pill.

I am glad to hear you’re not having too many crazy symptoms either. I was worried I wasn’t getting any of these symptoms and that maybe it wasn’t working for me or I wasn’t chewing it correctly. I don’t notice any changes, no spotting or cramping either. Maybe it’s different from person to person but I’m now relieved I’m not the only one who doesn’t see much of a change…still kinda sketched out from this whole thing, but here’s to hoping everything is a-okay!!

I’ve been on ministrin 24 for 2 months now due to loestrin 24 being discontinued and just these past 2 weeks noticed breast tenderness and had cramps that weren’t relieved with aspirin during my period. Both of these symptoms I never had with loestrin. I also have been really tired and lacking energy, I assumed it was due to a new job lol that started earlier. I thought I was going crazy but seeing others on here makes me feel better. My doc said it has only been tested with it being chewed, so I’m chewing it, would rather be safe than sorry.

My doctor gave me a prescription that said “LoEstrin Fe 1/20, one by mouth daily, pt to use extended cycle.  Dispense 4 packs, refill PRN.”  She did NOT sign on the line that says DISPENSE AS WRITTEN, she said generic was OK.  She said the Junel Fe would work as well as the LoEstrin 1/20, and I could choose how to fill it.  I have very heavy periods and she said that I would have less bleeding if I had fewer days off the pill every month, so she recommended that I take 24 days of active pills and 4 days of the fake ones.  That is same way that LoEstrin 24 was dosed.  She said that with the prescription written the way it was, I could choose to do 25 days on, and 3 off, or 26 days on and 2 off, etc.  She said that some people even take the active pills every day and never go off, but they have more spotting.

So far, so good.  I am not hemorrhaging to death.

    Thanks!

Was on Loestrin 24Fe for 7 years. Loved it, no periods even though I always took the placebos I never went straight to a second pack. Anyway, two months in Minastrin and I’ve experienced all of the above. The first month felt like I was pregnant, my period came back (ughhh), horrible mood swings. Second month still feeling bloated, weight gain, and just not like myself at all. Something is definitely different with this pill. Instead of trying Minastrin for a 3rd month, I called my doctor and am going to start Junel tomorrow! I am going to try taking it for 24 days instead like others have mentioned and see how it goes. I will post an update to this comment if it makes me feel like I’m on loestrin 24Fe, like a normal human being!

RE: going on Yaz. Do some research before you take those. There’s a ton of lawsuit information for Yaz and Yasmin. Problems with blood clots, heart issues and such. I do not recommend it, and you should definitely ask your doctor about it.

I was on Yasmin for years, switched to Yaz for a year and HATED it, even though I was told they’re the same thing, just a 24 set instead of 21. I had all sorts of weird heart problems during that year of Yaz, and they stopped soon after I switched back to the generic of Yasmin. New doc a few years ago told me to get off Yasmin immediately, that the heart problems were likely related. Switched to the Loestrin 24 FE for the last two years and it’s been great. Heart problems cleared up for the most part.

Not sure what I’m going to do about this discontinuation now. I had six months until I was planning to go off them. Not sure if it’s worth it to find something new that works for that short amount of time.

This is TMI, but I am really dry down there and have no sex drive. I think I am also an emotional wreck from it. It is bad enough that I am definitely switching to something else. As a side note—I mostly have been swallowing rather than chewing. I am going to chew from now on until I get a new Rx…

The side effects are listed on the web as exactly what you all are describing. The best alternative is loestrin 1/20 the formula is the same but you will have to go off the 4days a month on your own, as someone stated prior. I would definitely recommend chewing the pill rather than swallowing it since the directions say chew, not chew OR swallow, especially if you are concerned about effectiveness. Aside from side effects, I rarely got my period on Loestrine, only a few months out of the year. Will it be the same with this new pill and how long should I use back-up method for? I know you should use back-up method for a week after starting a new pill, but I’m thinking a month just to be safe. If you have any answers to these questions please let me know! smile

I got switched to Minastrin about 2 months ago, I was on Loestrin for 5 years, and I decided to go ahead and try it out. It was terrible. My face has been breaking out since day 1, and I haven’t had acne since I was 14 years old, SIX years ago. ALSO!!! THIS PILL CANNOT BE SWALLOWED!! You absolutely HAVE to chew and swallow it. My dad is a bio-chemist who used to make prescription drugs in a laboratory. He explained to me that pills must have a certain solubility rate to dissolve in your stomach. These pills are extremely hard and if they are not chewed completely they will not dissolve in your stomach and therefore will NOT get into your blood stream!! Nurses are not always familiar with these requirements of solubility. If you are swallowing these YOU ARE NOT PROTECTED! The manufacturing website states clearly that you have to chew it, so chew it. I called my ob-gyn today, and they’re switching me immediately. This pill was such a disappointment :(

I hear there will be a new generic called Lomedia24 Fe in January.  So is she supposed to have a headache until January?  I’m not hearing ANYTHING good about Gildess fe, Junel fe, Larin fe or Minastrin.  What.are.we.to.do?

I’ve been off it for a week and I still have a headache. (45+ days of a constant headache) It’s in my right eye and triggers down to upper back but now I can at least function driving etc. It’s not in a migraine status anymore but Dr said it can take a month until it’s fully out of my system. I had a cat scan, spinal tap, acupuncture, pills pills and more pills and noone had answers and no pill except for MORPHINE could even remotely get rid of this headache. As soon as you feel a headache get off this nightmare of a pill. I truly believe its bc of the new chewable packaging. I wouldn’t wish this experience on my worst enemy. My entire life and everyone I love have been affected by this for the past two months. I’m thinking no more bc even if my periods are severe. My body was literally rejecting this poison….

Thank you for explaining that even if it’s the chemical equivalent the additives can be different and why the generic won’t work! I had to have me regular physician write me a Rx for my loestrin 24 fe last summer when my gyno was closed the week of July fourth and my Rx ran out, and even though I asked for loestrin 24 fe he wrote in what he called the generic version (it was actually the generic of lo loestrin I believe) and I hated it. Sick, so much boob pain, cramping etc. Went right back the next month! Loestrin 24 fe was definitely worth the extra $.

Then I go to pick up my scrip in September and they had filled manastrin. I tell them that’s wrong but the guy told me instead of losing their patent on loestrin 24 fe, they just used the same chemical equivalent but made it chewable. I was so pissed! But I took it (i just swallow it) and haven’t noticed any major side effects, but when I went to my yearly she told me a lot of people aren’t doing well on it.

I have started getting really bad acne though on my chest, upper back and face and I hardly had acne on loestrin! But if that’s my only bad symptom I dread having to try new bc to find something to work, although the acne is getting ridiculous. Also, I completely skipped my period this time which I don’t like. I know some people prefer it but I liked that I had a two day very light period on loestrin to let me know it was working and I wasn’t pregnant wink This is the first time I have ever not had my period, so I freaked and took a test but it was negative. I’m wondering though if the skipping my period is from the new manastrin, I’ve been on it about 3-4 months now.

I’ve never been on loestrin but I have been on quite a few different pills that made my period heavy and didn’t help with my cramps (which was why I went on the pill in the first place). Minestrin made my period last no longer than 2 days with very little cramping. It’s doin everything it’s supposed to do. It can take people several changes before they find the right pill for THEM. Everyone’s different. It’s all experimental.

I am a pharmacist and the generic for Loestrin Fe 24 is now available.  It’s called Lomedia 24 FE. Ask your doctors to start writing for it.  It is really a generic, not that Minastrin chewable new brand name crap that Warner Chilcott pulled.

The Lomedia is not working out.  Migraine headaches, backache, nausea and acne all over the place.  There is just NO WAY this is “the same”.  Whoever it was at the manufacturer that made the call to DISCONTINUE LoEstrin due to a patent issue must hate women.  They have hurt a lot of us because of this.  Now what do we do?

I was switched to Minestra in Oct when they discontinued Loestrin 24!  I have gained over 10lbs in 4 months due to this stupid pill.  I don’t recommend it and will be switching IMMEDIATELY.  Anyone else have this problem with Minestra?

I was on Minastrin for 3 months. It wasn’t severe problems, but enough to make me wonder. Like most of you, I wasn’t told Loestrin 24 was going to be discontinued. I just went to go pick up my bc at CVS and the girl said, “Oh you’re on this now, they’re the same, though. I just didn’t want you to be weirded out if you noticed a different name on the package.” Well, I thought nothing of it. Since taking it, I developed breast tenderness, bloating, random cramps, and gained about 3-5 pounds. I didn’t connect any of this because I thought I was taking the same pill. Well, I got a YI back in December and it took forever to go away, and honestly don’t think it ever did. I just think it stopped being so annoying and itchy. This is when I decided to do some research. I was mortified and relieved to know I wasn’t alone. HOW CAN THEY SAY THIS IS THE SAME PILL?!?!

Monday, I called my OB/GYN and told her I wanted to be on LoMedia, she said that she nor the pharmacy had ever heard of it, but she could put me on Loestrin Fe. I had been on this before and done well, and she said that it had not been discontinued so I she’d call in a prescription. Imagine my fury when I saw that it’s fucking Junel. I feel like I have straight up been played. My cousin took this and said it’s not the same at all, and reading people’s horror stories about acne has me ready to bawl. Having suffered from acne for the better part of my life and now having clear skin, I just don’t think I can go through that again. I’m seriously praying this works out cause if not, I may have to go back to Yaz.

I swear birth control shouldn’t be this damned difficult.

    Hey everyone- esp Unhappy Camper-

Okay so I absolutely hate how doctors try to sneak in the generics. Stupid. Anyway, I just want to warn everyone against Levora and Yaz. PLEASE don’t go back to Yaz.Okay, well maybe it was just my sensitivity but I worked out religiously and my body only kept gaining prego wait despite me not being prego obviously so yeah ... Finally in 2011 I said screw it and told my dr to put me on Lo Lo Esterin 10 mg. She was clueless bc it was new, but I was getting desperate at this point it was either that or paragard and I don’t want to take the risk of never being able to have a child. Anyways i got on lo lo esterin, started LOOSING weight and I never have my period. I highly suggest at least giving it a try for those who have not had a child or can get by with 10 mg. I’m absolutely clueless about what to do if this stops working on me. I’ve never tried loesterine 24 but it’s always been next on my list lol. The only bad thing with Lo Lo Esterin 10 mg is that it’s $118.00, and I just dropped my tricare ins for regular and not meeting the deductible it’s like $86 ... Pointless yet worth it, unless PlannedParenthood offers it. I just highly suggest researching all generic versions regardless if pp suggests anything Or even your regular dr. I’m scared to try the newer version of loesterine 24 that was mentioned because my body is so dang sensitive but seeing as the only way one can tell about an oral conceptive’s affect is by trying and I honestly think if that doesn’t work out then I’m just going Paragard unless anyone else has any better suggestions. Sorry for the rant but if you haven’t tried it…look up lo lo esterin 10mg. Goodluck ya’ll.

  107. Avoid Minastrin says:

I originally started on ortho tri-cyclen, and it caused me to gain a lot of weight and get severely nauseated everyday. So about 2 years ago, my doctor switched me to Loestrin 24 Fe. I really liked it. No more nauseousness or vomiting, and I lost some of the weight I’d put on. I was still hesitant about what birth control pills were doing to me in general, but Loestrin was a welcome switch.

Like the rest of you, I was forced to switch to Minastrin in October, and told it was the same thing except chewable. Boy, were they wrong. It took me until this month to realize all of the damaging side effects. I’ve been breaking out like a teenager, put about 3-5 lbs back on, I have lots of bloating, and I’ll randomly get my period for a day or two halfway through the month.

Now don’t even get me started on the emotional effects! I have become so anxiety ridden and depressed, I was looking into therapy. I couldn’t figure out the cause of these unexplained mood swings that were so severe it was interfering with my life. Finally it was my mom that came forward and asked me why I’ve been so different since about November-ish when not much has changed at all in my life (except maybe the winter months, but I’ve never had SAD this bad). Finally I realized it was the pill, and I’ve read many other people’s testimonies to see its given similar effects to others.

It’s not the same pill, and it was messing with my life in a bad way. I’ve officially stopped taking it, and will post back with the results.

I’m on Gildress which is supposed to be a similar generic to Loestrin 24 Fe.  I loved Loestrin and I noticed acne, tiredness and weight gain on it.  Did you find a replacement pill?  I know it’s only been almost 2 months since you posted but I think I need to try a different one.

Hey guys i was just searching online because I’m due for a visit and wanted to switch back to loestrin and found out its discontinued. However, there is an actual generic of it now (4 placebo pills and all) called Lomedia 24 FE soo I am definitely giving that a try. It is really new and there isn’t much out there about it yet but fingers crossed because Loestrin was the best. Hope this helps.

I’ve been taking Gildess and/or Junel for the past few months. I was on Microgestin (another generic) before those, then my pharmacy stopped getting it, so thats why I went on the other two. Every body is different. But my experience with Gildess is nothing but horrible. I gained 5 pounds in ONE MONTH. (Mind you I’m a health nut and exercise all the time..) my breasts are swollen and HURT like hell. Not all generics are created equal… If you can get Microgestin I suggest that. But again, everyone is different. Good luck! I know how much this sucks!

For those of you who have experienced panic attacks/anxiety with minastrin, how long did it take to feel back to normal after stopping the pill? I was on it for 6 months. Stopped taking it a week ago and I’m still anxiety ridden.

I was switched to minastrin and 2 months later my gallbladder shut down and needed to be removed. I wake up at 3am every day regardless of what time I go to sleep, often to vomit. I was wondering if I was pregnant or having more digestive issues, but it turns out all of that plus the occasional chest pains are ALL minastrin. So yeah, they have a coupon on their website, so that it never costs more than $15, but that is because they need all the tricks they can get to switch people over to minastrin. They could have kept making Loestrin, but decided they would make more money this way.

Just like any birth control you’re going to see some changes. I’ve changed from Loestrin to the Minastrin (bc loestrin went away) and it’s fine. I don’t pay attention to side effects in the beginning bc then you begin to question yourself while on it ‘woah…am I acting psycho? Am I angry a lot? Am I gaining weight?’ It’s a myth that you gain weight on birth control, period. People use BC as “what caused them to gain weight” it’s all in your head. Work out more if you’re gaining weight. This response is a little late, BUT I’ve been on it since it changed and I am doing just fine AND swallowing the pills I do not chew it lol.

I’m currently switching from lo loestrin fe 1/20 to Junel fe 1/20, it is suppose to be the generic brand, I didn’t have any side effects with the loestrin fe, so I shouldn’t have any with the junel fe correct? If they are the same

It DOES NOT matter. Look at section 12.3 of the full prescribing information provided by minastrin: http://www.minastrin24.com/docs/indication.pdf

My doctor didn’t tell me to chew it, but I was concerned so I did some research:

    “12.3 Pharmacokinetics

    Absorption
    In a single-dose, two-way, crossover clinical study conducted in 35 healthy, non-smoking
premenopausal women under fasting condition, Minastrin 24 Fe tablet chewed and
swallowed was bioequivalent to norethindrone acetate 1 mg/ethinyl estradiol 0.020 mg tablet
(24-day regimen tablets) swallowed whole based on the exposure (AUC) and peak
concentration (Cmax) of norethindrone and ethinyl estradiol.”

What this means is that they had 35 people take the pill, sometimes they chewed it and sometimes they swallowed it. They measured how the active ingredients were absorbed into the body, and the result was “bioequivalence” aka THE SAME!!!

My guess is that “chewable” is used for patent / marketing purposes.

Has anyone tried lomedia yet? It’s the generic of loestrin and I’m wondering if it’s better than minastrin? Side effects? More similar to loestrin than minastrin is?

I was put on this pill when my doctor told me I was perimenopausal.  I am 44, and have maintained my weight for as long as I remember.  Maybe 2 pounds up or down, which is normal.  I have gained from 5-7 pounds on the Minastrin in less than 3 months.  I urinate more and break out like crazy.  My doctor said the side effects should subside after 3 months.  In a few weeks it will be 3 months.  I am willing to stick it out and see if she is right.

P.S.  Someone posted about weight gain and indicated we should work out more.  My routine hasn’t changed and I work out 3-5 times per week including jogging and yoga.  Nothing helps with the sudden weight gain.

I was so bummed when I found out Loestrin was being discontinued. My doctor prescribed Minastrin and I absolutely hated it! I switched to Lomedia a few months ago and love it. It’s the closest thing to Loestrin. I’ve actually lost weight since going on Lomedia, no periods, and no side effects!
