Feeling Cluttered? How to Successfully Declutter Your Life

Messy and cluttered desk

Are you lost in a cluttered house?

It happens slowly, but over time we all pick up gadgets, gizmos, and ornaments that we have every intention of using. But as the years pass we build a mountain of stuff you don’t realize you have until it’s spilling out of drawers. But how on earth are you going to deal with your mountain of clutter?

Don’t worry, we are here to help! Read on for a few tips to help you declutter your home today.

Set Goals

Before getting started, it’s best to make a plan of action. Start off with setting some goals you want to achieve. Things you should consider are:

  • Make a map or write down the rooms you want to declutter.
  • Give each room a priority rating from 1-3.
  • Plan your time, and expect each room to take more than a few hours.

By doing this, you’ll be planning your time so you will be most efficient. Giving time goals will also make it seem more like a challenge/game than a chore.

Create a System

As you go through decluttering your rooms, you’ll find it easy with a system to sort out the items. A good one to use is the “3 box method”.

This method makes you decide on the fate of your clutter item by item. It helps keep things organized rather than spiraling into a bigger mess than before. All you need to do is get 3 storage boxes or bins and label them:

  • Keep
  • Store
  • Toss

With a plan in place and an easy way to sort your items, you’re ready to get rid of that clutter.

Sort Out That Clutter

For items that don’t make the cut, here are a few options you can do with them.

Recycle

Anything you come across that is glass, plastic or paper you can put in your recycling bin. Or you can transport it to the nearest recycling point. You can recycle most electronics too!

Donate

One person’s junk is another’s treasure. You can donate household items, shoes, clothes and more to your local charity. Or you can post it to a site like Freecycle.org.

Hold a Garage Sale

If you want to make a little money you can host a garage sale. Make sure you start the decluttering process in advance so you have more to sell. The more you have on offer, the more attractive your stall will look.

Rent a Dumpster

If you want to get rid of larger items or large amounts, this is an affordable option. You can rent a dumpster which the company will deliver to your house and you fill it up.

Once it’s full, they will come and take it away. Similar to this, you can hire a junk hauling company to come take away all your unwanted junk.

Make Sure Your Home Is Cluttered No More!

So there you have it! If you follow these tips, you will make sure your home is no longer cluttered.

Before you start, make sure you have a plan of action and select a method of how you’ll approach it. Then think about how you’re going to get rid of the clutter. Those things that are reusable, consider donating or selling in a yard sale. For those things that are junk, consider a junk hauling company.
